Update

New updates are released from time to time. Some programs are updated to introduce new or improved features. Some updates are for improved security. When people writing Linux programs discover security vulnerabilities, they update programs to eliminate them. It is a good idea to install updates, to keep your computer secure.

Add Repositories using Synaptic Package Manager

Synaptic Package Manager can be started from the menu. It is under System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. You need to enter the root password.

In Synaptic Package Manager, click "Settings," then "Repositories."

Click on the tab "Debian Software."

Click on the square preceeding "Officially supported (main)," so it has a tick in it. You may also click on squares preceeding the others, and include them.

Click on the tab "Updates."

Click on the square preceeding "Security updates."

Click "Close."

Now now that you have included additional repositories, click "Reload." This will download lists of the latest packages available, and may take some time, the first time you do it. Next time, it will only download lists that have changed since last time, and be quicker. Synaptic Package Manager and Update Manager use the same lists, so if you update one, the other will be up to date.

When finished, close Synaptic Package Manager.

Using Update Manager

Update Manager can be started from the menu. It is under System -> Administration -> Update Manager.

If you have just updated package lists using Synaptic Package Manager, they will be up to date. If you use Update Manager some time later, click "Check." This will update package lists.

You may download and install all updates, or click on the squares preceeding some updates to untick them.

Click "Install Updates."

Downloading updates may take time.

If you are disconnected from the internet while the packages are partly downloaded, or you click "Cancel," the partly downloaded files remain in the computer. When you reconnect, you can click "Install Updates" again, and continue downloading and installing.
