Install Microcore

Microcore separates Tiny Core into smaller parts, giving users even more options.

Tiny Core may be installed on a hard drive as explained in Install on a Hard Drive Without Being Connected to the Internet. To install Microcore, use this method with the following modifications.

Files

You need the Microcore iso (get the latest version).

In addition, you need:

Xlibs.core.tczl (from core_elements)

Xprogs.core.tczl (from core_elements)

Xvesa.core.tcz (from core_elements/Xserver)

wbar.tcz (from the tcz repository)

One of the window managers (from the tcz repository)

Window Managers

The default window manager in Tiny Core is flwm.

Examples of window managers include:

flwm

icewm

jwm

jwm-snapshot

wmaker

Xfce4base

When installing window managers, include any dependencies.

Download Sites

Files may be downloaded from various internet sites. Examples include:

The official host

North Carolina, U.S.A.

ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/

Some other mirrors are:

Greece

http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/tinycorelinux/

ftp://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/tinycorelinux/

Netherlands

http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/tinycorelinux/

http://ftp.vim.org/os/Linux/distr/tinycorelinux/

Be aware, when something is added or updated on the official site, there may be some time before this appears on the other mirrors.

Install Microcore

Copy and paste Microcore (the directory "boot" and its contents) to the partition.

Create a directory called "tce."

Paste the other files to the directory tce.

Set Up Grub

The Grub commands for Microcore are:

default 0
timeout 5

title   Microcore
root   (hd0,0)
kernel   /boot/bzImage quiet tce=sda1 home=sda1 opt=sda1 max_loop=255
initrd   /boot/microcore.gz

If you view this on a screen with a low resolution, the end of the long line may return and be on the next line. If you enter it that way, it will not work. It must be on one line.

If you are installing Microcore in partition other than sda1, use appropriate partition information.

If you don't use Backup to save and restore settings, include "norestore" in the line which begins with "kernel."

Other Aspects the Same as Tiny Core

Other aspects of installation are the same as Installing Tiny Core Without Being Connected to the Internet.

More than One Window Manager

You can install more than one window manager, and specify desktop=name bootcode (in the line following kernel). For example, desktop=jwm or desktop=xfce4.

You can have more than one entry in Grub, and use different window managers at different times.
